Volunteering Team

Segulah is a volunteer-driven community, and both our High Holiday services and the rest of our programming throughout the year cannot happen without your help. Please let us know if you are willing to volunteer to help make Segulah high holidays run their smoothest.

This year we are asking each adult registrant to strongly consider volunteering for a volunteer “team.”

Children's Programming

Children of all ages are an integral part of our community! There will be programming and babysitting for children. Babysitting will be available at all times for kids ages 0 through 12, and there will be a tot-age (0-5) service and an elementary-age (6-11) service each morning. There will also be opportunities for older children to take leadership roles, to volunteer, to help with younger children, and to participate as a cohort in the adult services.

COVID and Vaccination Policies

Vaccination policy: Segulah’s vaccination policy requires that all attendees of Segulah events, including Shabbat services and children’s programming, be immunized following age-appropriate CDC recommendations. For the purposes of COVID, this means that all Segulah attendees over the age of 6 months must be fully vaccinated and boosted against COVID to the maximum extent available to them. Attendees who are newly eligible for either vaccination or additional boosters must be vaccinated or boosted within 8 weeks of becoming eligible. Mask use is currently optional at all Segulah events, both indoors and outdoors.
Prior to arriving:
1. COVID Symptoms: If a participant has a fever above 100.3 degrees, feels even mildly sick, or has COVID symptoms, they should do a COVID test before attending. If the test is negative and the symptoms are minor, they may attend. If the test is positive, or if a participant has recently tested positive for COVID and is within 10 days since the start of those symptoms (or 10 days of the initial positive if it was before the start of symptoms), or if they are under quarantine from any institution or by recommendation of a health professional, that participant should not come. If, after a positive test, a participant has a negative COVID test and their symptoms have resolved, then they can attend even if they are still within the 10 days.
2. COVID Exposure: Fully vaccinated participants who have been in close contact with someone who has COVID within 10 days of a Segulah event may come to Segulah PROVIDED they are symptom-free and test negative for COVID on the day of the event. Participants should mask at all indoor Segulah events during this period.
Physical distancing: All participants should respect the distancing preferences of other participants.
Eating and meals: Segulah events may involve food, such as kiddush lunches. In these situations, there will be tables and chairs available for eating outside, weather permitting, or takeout containers will be made available in the event of inclement weather.

High Holiday COVID Testing Policy

Due to the large scale of Segulah high holidays, in order to keep our community safer and healthier, all attendees age 6 months and up will be required to take rapid antigen COVID-19 tests once per holiday. Tests should be taken no earlier than 12 hours before the start of the holiday. Any individual with a positive result should not attend. Other household members who test negative and are not experiencing symptoms may attend but should mask indoors. Test kits are generally available at Montgomery County Public Library locations. Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah

Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah will be upon us not long after Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

There are varying views within the Segulah community on what day(s) Shemini Atzeret falls, and we have celebrated that diversity in past years by organizing services on both 22 Tishrei and 23 Tishrei. This year, those dates correspond to Thursday, October 24 and Friday, October 25 on the civil (Gregorian) calendar. Both days will include hakafot and reading the end & beginning of the Torah. Both days will include Hallel and Yom Tov liturgy. Only the first day will include Yizkor and Geshem.

Support Segulah High Holidays

We anticipate that holding these services will cost about $22,000. In order to cover the costs, which include two catered meals and generous compensation for educators, childcare providers, and lead organizers, we suggest a donation of at least $75 per person (child or adult) for Rosh Hashanah, and of at least $75 per person (child or adult) for Yom Kippur. Based on attendance expectations, $110 per person per holiday is more likely to result in costs being covered, so if you are able to be generous and contribute at that level or higher, please do so.

There will be no additional solicitation of donations during the holidays. We want Segulah services to be financially accessible to everyone, and we appreciate your gift of any size.
